CHARACTER
Name: Kiki
Canon: Kiki's Delivery Service
Gender: Female
Age: 13
Wing Color: Blue

Canon Point: Post-film, having sent off her letter to her parents.
Canon Point Explanation: It's the end of the film. Kiki has regained her powers and become a great deal more confident in herself from when she first arrived in Koriko.
History: Nausicaa.net to the rescue.

Personality:
At first, Kiki seems to come across as old fashioned and very polite. As she grew up in a town out in the countryside she's less accustomed to modern conveniences and other new fangled technology. Though her hometown has cars there really aren't that many. Compared to Koriko and its hustle and bustle, cars are always on the streets at most hours of the day. Kiki never seems to remember she can't run across the street like she could back home, resulting in many close run-ins with cars and buses. At one point she's even told to get off of the street by a fireman as they race by in an emergency vehicle when the dirigible crashes into the clocktower. While she isn't as used to electrical appliances as most are in Koriko, Kiki is more than happy to use what she has, namely a wood fire stove. Her knowledge of more dated appliances tends to come in handy, especially when Madame's oven is on the blink and Kiki offers to help out by preparing a fire in her old, wood burning oven. Ever the polite girl, Kiki always makes sure to curtsy when meeting someone. She uses sir and ma'am to refer to those that are older than her, though she speaks far more casually when speaking to someone closer to her own age. Despite this, Tombo still remarks in their first meeting that Kiki sounds like his grandmother when she talks.

When it comes to work, Kiki is a very diligent and determined to get the job done right. If she needs to fly further than usual or work a little harder to make sure everything comes out right then she'll do it. In fact, even outside of her working in the bakery and maintaining her delivery service business, Kiki's determination is still evident. When her powers start to wane, Kiki immediately heads to a hill where she starts trying to take off over and over, even when she starts to fall and stumble all over the place. Only when her broom breaks on her does she finally decide to give up.

At only thirteen years old, Kiki is already out in the world and making a living for herself. She lives alone, cooks all of her own meals and performs all of her own chores. Within her first few days of being in Koriko, Kiki is already counting out her money and making plans for how she's going to start making some form of income in the future to account for her living expenses. She's able to come up with a business idea that makes use of her one skill as a witch, her flying, and then pitches her idea to Osono when she next sees her. Kiki is also very resourceful and a quick thinker, being able to think up plans for how to stall for time when a delivery goes wrong. All in all she's a very independent young girl with a great head on her shoulders who has her life all planned out for the coming year.

Overall, Kiki is a kind and caring person who does her best to look after her customers and those she comes to get to know. She's willing to go that extra mile to help out when she can, going as far as helping out around Madame's house despite only being asked to come over to make a delivery. What's more, she never expects anything in return for working more than what's expected of her. Even before starting up her delivery service, Kiki offers to fly a baby's pacifier down to the parent who had just recently left Osono's bakery. At this point, Kiki had never met Osono and merely offered to help out after overhearing what the problem was from Osono as she got ready to go after the mother of the baby to return the pacifier.

Though she enjoys helping others out and doing what she can for them, Kiki never expects anything in return for her good deeds (outside of payment for her delivery jobs, of course). She flat out refuses to accept money when she can't complete a delivery and even appears shocked when she's paid extra for all the additional work she's done, initially exclaiming that what she's being paid is far too much. Kiki rarely takes anything or accepts help from anyone without finding something to offer in return, often returning any favours with work of her own. She frequently ends up cleaning and performing chores for those who help her out, particularly Ursula when she offers to repair the stuffed cat Kiki was trying to deliver. Even when Madame bakes Kiki a cake which brings her to tears, Kiki asks to know Madame's birthday so she can return such a kind act with one of her own. Being thanked or told she's doing a good job only spurs her on to work even harder even future, particularly in regards to helping out in the bakery.

An excitable girl, Kiki loves it when all of her hard work pays off and everything starts coming together. It's hard to ignore how happy Kiki is when Osono tells her that she'll be Kiki's first account for her delivery service, which causes Kiki to promise to work even harder in return. She also ends up throwing herself at the baker when she spots an advertisement for her new business in the bakery's window made of bread. Kiki is also very adventurous and a bit of a risk taker, especially when it comes to her flying. Her intention when she sets off from home is to find a town by the ocean, so she immediately starts to fly south to see what she can find. Also, despite never having ridden a bike, Kiki ends up riding along with Tombo down to see the dirigible. Though the two end up crashing on their way there, Kiki comes out of the experience happy despite telling Tombo she was scared at the time. The two end up laughing about the experience, with Kiki mostly laughing at Tombo's face after the crash, without seeming too shaken up about what happened at all.

Though she has a bumpy start in Koriko and she seems to go through some rough patches, Kiki always tries her best to stay positive and remain optimistic. She offers to perform chores despite having a party to attend, being certain that she can stay and help out for as long as she's needed and still be able to make the party once everything is finished. What's more, she remains optimistic that she'll meet more nice people in Koriko if she sticks around and doesn't move on like Jiji suggests when he asks if they can find another town. She tends to respond to any doubts Jiji might have about her flying, her choice in town or anything else with positivity, believing there aren't any witches in Koriko already and reminding Jiji to think positive and to stop worrying when he's being a downer.

For all of her optimism, once Kiki starts to lose heart it seems as though everything starts to go wrong at once. She starts losing confidence in herself and her passion for flying diminishes with all of the work she does. Soon after, she finds herself not being able to fit in with other people her own age which only helps in making Kiki feel even more down about herself than she did before. Finally her powers start to disappear, meaning she can no longer make deliveries or complete her training. When so much seems to be going wrong she has a hard time finding the good in all the bad that's been happening, often resulting in her doubting her abilities or her being unsure if her powers will ever return at all. Compared to her often kind and sociable self, Kiki becomes withdrawn and keeps to herself a lot more when things aren't looking up for her, even going as far as shutting out the friends who are being kind and are worried about her, namely Tombo and Osono.

However, despite this, Kiki is always able to find a way to turn things around and come through for her friends when it matters most, even if she needs a little push in the right direction to get her going. Though she may lack confidence at times, Kiki is a plucky, dependable person who is far braver than she thinks she is. When Tombo is in danger, Kiki is able to regain her witches powers and fly to his rescue before it's too late, despite previously being unsure if she will ever regain her powers. Though she sometimes finds herself feeling homesick, Kiki is overall very happy to be staying in Koriko despite everything she's been through while staying there.

Strengths
Physical: Kiki is a witch in-training and as such she's capable of flying on a broomstick like most witches can. She's been flying since she was very young, having been taken along on her mother's broom to get used to the feeling of flying. As witches 'fly with their spirit', Kiki has a much easier time flying when she's feeling confident and in a good mood.

She has no problems flying high up into the sky or flying quickly when she's in a hurry. and though she tends have trouble doing so she can also make it through bad weather like rains and storms if she tries. The magic she uses to fly seems to apply to other objects than just broomsticks, though even Kiki isn't quite sure how her powers work exactly, leading to her telling Tombo that 'anything is possible' when he asks if her powers made the two of them take off on Tombo's propeller bike.

Mental: Kiki is resourceful and a quick thinker, being able to put plans together in an instant which has helped get out of more than one bad situation in the past. When she loses the stuffed cat she was meant to deliver, Kiki decides to have Jiji pose as the stuffed cat while she goes to find it. That way she can make the delivery on time and still be able to search for the stuffed cat and return with it later on.

She's also very determined, intending to make sure that any job she does is done right. Kiki isn't one to give up right away, as evidenced when she's running late and she ends up racing to make appointments and when she's trying to fly again when her powers start to diminish. Additionally, despite having no knowledge of how much to charge for her services at first, Kiki soon develops a way to work out how much a delivery would cost based on the objects weight and where it's being delivered to, going as far as to inquire if the package being delivered will be within out outside city limits to make sure she finds an accurate, fair price. This shows just how hard working and eager Kiki is to learn, showing that she intends to do the best for herself and for her customers and the business she runs.

Finally, Kiki's astonishingly independent for her age. Though her mother has her worries, Kiki was able to find the exact kind of town she was looking for by the ocean and become it's resident witch, and then start up her own business as a means of making income so she can support herself for the coming year. She insists on being able to carry out all of her deliveries herself, even when she's having trouble struggling with a particularly heavy package. Even though she could always use the money, Kiki refuses to be paid for work she hasn't done or if she owes someone something for their trouble. After falling sick and being looked after by Osono, Kiki tells Osono that her next delivery is on her and only takes the money after Osono insists otherwise.

Emotional: Kiki tends to have an upbeat and positive attitude which doesn't just apply to her work and her deliveries but her daily life too. When making a delivery she tries to remain optimistic that it'll be made on time without the customer having to be kept waiting. Should Jiji express any doubt, be it about her flying, the weather or anything else then Kiki is quick to tell him to 'think positive'. Her customers always come first with Kiki striving to make sure they're happy with her delivery service. If a job can't be completed satisfactorily then Kiki will work to make sure the delivery is a success, such as when she believes she can't deliver the stuffed cat after it's ripped and ends up doing chores for Ursula while she repairs it.

She's a hard worker who keeps her heart in the right place, such as performing additional chores for Madame while her casserole bakes and offering to return the baby's pacifier for Osono when she steps out of the bakery to do it herself. Kiki never accepts additional payment for any of her good deeds and she never expects anything extra in return for what she does, such as when Madame pays her extra for everything Kiki does for her while she's visiting. Kiki is even brought to tears when she ends up receiving a surprise cake from Madame for her efforts, and even then she wants to Madame's birthday so Kiki can find a way to repay her for her kindness.

Weaknesses
Physical: Outside of being a witch in training, there's very little about Kiki that differs from a normal girl her age. She can become sick, be injured and die just like any other person.

Kiki always seems to put her customers above that of her own wellbeing, leading to her flying through storms and inclement weather all for the sake of making her deliveries on time. It's because of this that Kiki ends up falling ill when trying to make sure the food that Madame asked her to deliver did not become cold before it reached its destination.

Mental: Kiki is severely lacking in street smarts, often resulting in her running out into roads in front of cars and other vehicles without a second thought. She also struggles with her time keeping skills, often realising that while she's fretting over one thing she should be concentrating on something else entirely, such as wondering what to wear for Tombo's party when she should be working on her deliveries.

Through her meetings with Tombo and her subsequent run-ins with him, it's shown that Kiki can be quite rude and ungrateful when she wants to be. Despite helping her escape from a traffic cop, Kiki is quick to tell Tombo why the two of them shouldn't be talking, saying it's rude to talk to a girl without being introduced, before walking off. When Tombo continues to talk to her she tells him to leave her alone and storms off on her broom. Though the two start to get along eventually, it doesn't last long as Kiki soon realises that one of Tombo's friends is the granddaughter of Madame, the girl who didn't seem appreciative or thankful in the slightest for her grandmother's work and Kiki's delivery. She once again walks off, leaving Tombo at the beach while insisting she isn't mad contrary to her current behaviour. Though Tombo's friends are actually amazed at how Kiki is already working at her age, Kiki takes the way they stare at her as a negative thing, leaving feeling as though she's an outsider who can't fit in no matter who it is she meets.

Emotional: When Kiki starts to feel down it takes a lot to make her feel happy again. It's as though she finds herself on a slippery slope, where one thing going wrong tends to lead to another. Her often positive view on her work and life seems to change and she starts to focus on the bad rather than the good. When Osono asks what's wrong and if there's anything she can do, Kiki tells her with that as she's still in training and her magic is disappearing she's lost 'absolutely everything'.

SAMPLES

[The journal opens to a view of the village from Kiki's apartment window. It takes her a moment to adjust the book so the sun isn't glaring onto the pages, but she soon manages to work it into a position she's happy with.]

I was thinking of going out to the beach today. It's certainly warm enough, and the breeze today seems gentle. All in all it's perfect flying weather, but I don't think flying all the way over there would be a great idea. We would be packing up and getting ready to leave before we even arrived.

[Kiki sighs to herself, breathing in deeply as she looks down at the village below.]

It'll probably smell fantastic down there, being right next to the ocean. [She giggles.] I hope that doesn't sound too strange! But it's true, isn't it? The ocean has that salty, refreshing smell to it, and the forests around here have a scent of their own too. The village itself is... A little harder to place.

[Whatever the village does smell of, it doesn't match Koriko. But then again, not much could live up to a one of a kind town like that...

Kiki's expression droops, leaving her thankful that she decided to point the journal away from her for this entry. When she was back in her own world she at times became homesick when thinking about her parents and her home town, but now she's in another world she's experiencing those same feelings for Osono, Tombo and all of Koriko. Eventually, Kiki realises her mind is starting to wander, leading to her grabbing the journal and turning it towards her face.]

Oh, I'm sorry! I was just wondering about something. [But never mind that right now. Kiki claps her hands together and smiles.] If we're heading for the beach then we need to go through the teleporter in the barracks, don't we? I'll be over there in about an hour, so that gives everyone plenty of time to get ready. Maybe if everyone that wants to come brings something to eat with them we can have a picnic on the sand. I'll stop by the shops on the way over and see if I can find a few blankets for us to sit on, no one wants to get sand in their sandwiches!

[There's one last smile from Kiki before she grabs her broom and closes the journal. Though she misses her home and her parents from time to time it wouldn't do her any good to dwell on those feelings and start feeling down over them. Instead she looks forward to her day at the beach, hoping that a few of the friends she made in her time here have decided to join her in spending a day in the sun.]

Third Person:

Another day, another trip down to the grocery for this week's shopping. And with it, another chance for Kiki to gaze in at the many different outfits inside the clothing store.
In a world where money is no longer necessary and everything is free, there's really nothing stopping her from entering the shop and taking whatever beautiful, fancy clothing she takes a liking to. Plenty of other villagers came to the store for clothes, be it for the next upcoming New Feather party or for a spell of bad weather. What difference would it make if Kiki walked in and picked up a stunning new dress for herself?

A minute passes with Kiki still staring in through the shop's windows, then another, and another. She glances down at the dark dress she always wears and sighs. It's tradition, all witches wear this colour during their training period, she knows that. But what of her training now? She had never heard what to do from her mother in the event her training was interrupted, not like this.

A couple more minutes drift on by with Kiki still in front of the clothing store. She eventually moves to open the door to the shop, hesitates for just a moment longer, and finally pushes her way inside. Rather than heading for the many glamorous articles of clothing that line the front of the store, Kiki instead decides to pick up something different entirely. A new ribbon for her hair, blue, to match the colour of her wings. Perhaps she didn't know quite what to do right now, but until Kiki figures out what it is she wants she decides to play it safe by sticking with tradition. Maybe she can figure out some way to complete her training here! A year away from home would still be a year away from home no matter where she spent it after all, what matters most is how she spends it.

With her new ribbon folded neatly in her pocket, Kiki resumes her trip to the grocery. She makes sure to remind herself to ask the owner of the store if there's anything she can do to help out. Everything might be free, but that doesn't mean she's going to start taking whatever she wants without finding a way to pay the village back, somehow.
